Accessing the beaches of Naxos

Naxos is the biggest of all Cyclades islands and that gives it a huge advantage. It has well over 30 beaches of unique beauty, ideal even for the most demanding traveller.

The island’s best known beaches are at its southwest side. Most famous are Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka, which gather thousands of tourists each year. Their sand and water quality are unique and they have been characterized as among the best beaches in the Cyclades.

At the northern side of Naxos (both east and west), the beaches are being formed as the mountains dive in the Aegean, which is why, although sandy, they are surrounded by rocks. Even though they are often battered by the northern winds, they are of unique beauty and usually gather fishermen. Such a beach is Azalas, known only to few, with amazing rock formations that drop vertically in the sea water. At Apollonas, the small port is a refuge for all the fishing caiques which seek shelter during the strong northern meltemia winds.

Many of the beaches of Naxos (some being just small coves) can only be accessed by boat. They are reserved for a few and offer no tourist amenities. Sailing cruises depart on a daily basis from the port of Naxos Town to make all the secret coves available to the tourists who wish to explore this part of the Aegean Sea.

Most of Naxos’ beaches are sandy and only a few have pebbles. Some, like Saint George beach in Naxos Town, Agia Anna and Psili Ammos have very shallow waters for several metres and that is what makes them ideal for families with young children.

Naxos has such a wide selection of beaches that there is no doubt that you will find your beach. All you need to do is get there and start with your Naxos exploration.
